FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

Methodist University in Fayetteville has received a pair of donations totaling $1.7 million as part of a fundraising campaign.

The latest gifts have allowed the school to reach a goal for a health science building on campus, The Fayetteville Observer reported.

Ramon Yarborough is donating $1.2 million for the effort. Yarborough is former publisher of The Fayetteville Observer and former president of Fayetteville Publishing Co. He is a trustee at Methodist University.

Norwood and David Bryan donated about $500,000. Norwood Bryan is the husband of Mary Lynn Bryan, who chairs the school's board of trustees. He and his brother own a car dealership.

Methodist University has now raised $27 million of a $35 million campaign goal.

University President Ben Hancock said the gifts will allow the school to begin construction of key facilities later this summer.

The Thomas R. McLean Health Sciences Building will be home to the proposed Doctor of Physical Therapy program, the school's first doctoral program. It will include space for classrooms, laboratories and a mobility courtyard for patients.
