BRISTOL, VA (WJHL) -

Johnson Commercial Development announced Thursday that they purchased the Grand Guitar in Bristol, Tennessee.

According to a news release from Johnson Commercial Development, the Grand Guitar, located on Interstate 81 across from the Tennessee Welcome Center, is believed to be the world’s largest guitar-shaped building.

“We think the Grand Guitar represents the perfect welcome to Bristol, Tennessee, the birthplace of country music,” Steve Johnson, president of Johnson Commercial Development, said. “Purchasing the Grand Guitar was a way for us to honor the city’s musical roots, and although we don’t have final development plans yet, we intend to restore it to the iconic piece of Americana it deserves.”

According to the release, the guitar was built in 1983 by musician and guitar-maker Joe Morrell, and has served as a music museum, gift shop, recording studio and roadside attraction, as well as WOPI-AM.

“We believe the Grand Guitar will serve as the perfect segue to attract people to downtown Bristol and the new Birthplace of Country Music Museum,” Johnson said. “Also, its proximity to The Pinnacle will make it a unique additional attraction for visitors traveling from across the region for the multi-faceted shopping experience at Exit 74.”

Johnson Commercial Development is the developer of The Pinnacle, which will include a variety of shops, such as Bass Pro Shops and Belk.

According to a Belk news release, construction has started on the two-story, 132,000-square-foot Belk fashion store.

Expected to open on March 11, 2015, the new store will reportedly incorporate the latest in retail design, lighting, merchandise presentation and décor.

“We’re extremely excited about our new Belk store at The Pinnacle,” Jan Clevenger, chair of the Belk Western Division, said. “It is being designed, built and merchandised especially to meet the fashion needs of our loyal customers in the Bristol and Tri-Cities area and represents our continued commitment to serving this community.”

The store will reportedly contain ladies apparel, cosmetics, shoes, accessories and jewelry, as well as men’s and children’s departments.
