SPCA offers tips for keeping pets calm during July 4th

RALEIGH, N.C. -

With many communities launching fireworks, the Fourth of July is one of the most stressful times of the year for pets.

"Because of the thunderous booms, the pets don't understand what that is. ... They run off," explained Darci VanderSlik, with the SPCA of Wake County.

To keep you pets calm, the SPCA of Wake County offered a number of tips for during Independence Days celebrations.

  • Keep them at home and indoors before the fireworks starts. Even outdoor pets should be brought inside.
  • Keep the pet in their crate or bed to help reduce stress.
  • Close the curtains and blinds in your home.
  • Turn on the TV to mask the noise.
  • Make sure your pet is micro-chipped and tagged.

"If the pet isn't microchipped or has a tag on, they end up in the shelters," VanderSlik said. "For an already crowded shelter, that could mean life or death for your pet."
