Top items to shop for this 4th of July weekend

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

No doubt you’ve seen all the ads.

Every store out there is hoping you’ll come in this Fourth of July weekend and spend some quality time with your wallet. But, is it worth it? Should you take advantage of all those big, bold bargains this weekend? 8 on your side is watching out for your money this holiday weekend. We went to the experts to get some answers.

Dr. Ron Hooker is a market professor with USF and says this is “absolutely” the best time to shop. The longtime financial expert says stores are looking to clear inventory from Memorial Day. In addition, he points out that this is particularly important because companies want to make room in their warehouses for back-to-school and yes, Black Friday and Christmas shopping.

“Actually, if you were to walk through the back side of a store, you'd already start to see holiday items for Christmas and Thanksgiving,” Dr. Hooker told 8 on your side. “That's why it's important to get it out of the store and get it to you.”

So, what are the top items?

Dr. Hooker tells us, “I would say electronics, appliances. I would go further, if you have a college student, bed linens and towels, things of that nature.”

And, shoppers are already seeing big crowds in the stores.

Maurine Thomas was shopping in Tampa with her children today and told us, “They're flying out there to get it. There's plenty of people in there, so they're buying the stuff.”

And, by all means, be bold.

Experts say don’t be afraid to demand the best bargain. Stores know that shoppers are very savvy. With social media and online ads, consumers are more involved and informed than ever. “Ask for deals,” said Dr. Hooker. “The stores expect it.”

And, when is the best time to do your shopping?

Dr. Hooker tells 8 on your side, “Saturday you’ll find the best deals.”
