Independence Day means free fishing in NC

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -  The Fourth of July in North Carolina means independence from fishing licenses in North Carolina.

All day long on July 4th anglers who are both from the state and from out of state can fish without a license in North Carolina waters.

The program was started by the legislature back in 1994 and the state's free fishing day always falls on Independence Day.

While anglers don't need a license, they must obey other state fishing rules such as size of fish caught and restrictions on lures.

On any other day of the year, anyone 16 and older must have a fishing license from the state Wildlife Resources Commission.
