Gay blood drive held in Durham

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

Cities across North Carolina are taking part in a nationwide effort to bring attention to the ban against gay men from donating blood.

A blood drive was held Friday at the American Red Cross on University Drive in Durham.

In 1983, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned gay and bisexual men from donating blood.

But with rigorous testing and more information on HIV and AIDS, supporters say the rules need an update.

A White House petition was launched earlier this month asking the FDA to change its policy. If 100,000 people sign the petition by July 30, President Obama's administration will issue a response.
