Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - People at one Eastern North Carolina church got a special treat Sunday, Hershel “Woody” Williams.

Williams is the last living recipient of the Medal of Honor from the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. Williams served as the guest speaker at the People’s Baptist Church in Greenville.

President Truman awarded Williams with the Medal of Honor in October, 1945 after fighting for four hours under heavy enemy fire to help the United States capture Iwo Jima.

“We never know what faith and fate will hand us,” said Williams. “It was faith that put in war, faith in my country that gave me a full life of wonder and the right to those precious words pursuit of liberty and happiness."

Williams says he continues to share his story to honor God and honor his fellow servicemen that didn’t have a chance to come home from the war.
