Puppy Rescue in Bolton Branch

MOBILE, Ala. -

After a heavy rain, Debra and Dennis Evans made their usual trip to Bolton Branch on Azalea Road.

"We bring our dog here sometimes and look in the creek to see how high the water gets during storms," Debra said.

But this time was different. "Thought I saw a plastic bag and sure enough there was a dog swimming in the water. It tried to swim up the falls and almost drowned," she said.

Exhausted from trying to get out of the huge drainage canal, the dog seemingly gave up and curled up on the grass, cold and wet. "We called y'all and the fire department and police and animal control," said Debra.

Soon after she made the phone calls, Lindsey Carter with the Animal Rescue Foundation showed up, who just happened to be in the area searching for another dog named Mugsy. When she realized it wasn't Mugsy that was stuck, she tried to help anyway.

"I had flip flops on so it was a little difficult to get down there," said Carter.

So they waited, and nearly an hour after the initial emergency call, Animal Control arrived. The officer quickly jumped into action, carefully climbing down the embankment, making his way to the pup. He spent a few minutes trying to capture the frightened dog. Then came the task of getting climbing his way out. With a slip of a rock, and a steady grip, they made it out safely.

How's this for a happy ending? After being checked in at the City of Mobile Animal Shelter, Lindsey went to pick up the puppy and found Mugsy at the shelter as well.

If you would like to adopt the dog, give the City of Mobile Animal Shelter a call.
