RALEIGH, N.C. -

Gov. Pat McCrory signed several bills Tuesday, including one abolishing Common Core in North Carolina and another that was sponsored by the late Dr. Jim Fulghum of Wake County.

The Common Core bill, Senate Bill 812, was ratified July 16 after dissatisfaction in the General Assembly with Common Core. McCrory had previously said he would sign the bill.

The bill sponsored by Fulghum was House Bill 644, which required the Department of Labor to develop regulations by Jan. 1, 2016, that protect health care personnel who work near hazardous materials and chemotherapy drugs.

"This legislation will provide needed protections to our health care professionals," said Governor McCrory. "It is fitting that this was sponsored by the late Rep. Fulghum. As a medical doctor, this bill furthers his legacy of caring about the personal safety of others."

McCrory said he would give the pen he used to sign the bill to Fulghum’s widow at his funeral.
