Man in custody in connection to Jacksonville shooting death

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - Police now have a man in custody in connection to a shooting death investigation.

It happened Wednesday night in the area of Market Street and Bell Fork Road in Jacksonville.

Officers responding to the scene found Robert Ward, 26, has been shot and had died from his injuries.

Detectives quickly identified Antonio Lemont Best, 30, as a person of interest in Ward’s shooting death. Best’s is charged with Felony Conspiracy Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon. Best turned himself in to Jacksonville Police Detectives by telephone.  He was taken into custody by officers at 11:26 AM without incident.

“The preliminary investigation revealed that Best conspired with Robert Ward to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.  The investigation is ongoing.  We continue to conduct interviews and are actively following leads.” stated Lieutenant Ronnie Dorn, JPD Investigations Supervisor.
