A new twist on a fake check scam is targeting Mary Kay consultants.

According to Mary Kay, the scammers are contacting consultants via email or through the companies “Contact Me” section on its website.

Consultant Courtney Payton tells 9 On Your Side the con artist contacted her via text message. After that initial text message, the person then tried to place an order by emailing Payton directly.

"They told me they needed to order some products for an event that they were having, and they asked me to send them an email for ordering information. They emailed me back a list of products that they needed and they wanted to know the total for the amount of the order,” said Payton.

Payton says will she was waiting on the money to arrive, the scammer emailed her saying they mailed the wrong amount and asked her to cash the cashier’s check and send the remainder back. Payton says it was that request that sent off a red flag.

“They told me that they sent the wrong amount of money to me for $2200 and the product order was roughly $150. I thought to myself, who mixes up that amount of money because I know I wouldn't. So that's when I realized this is probably a scam,” said Payton.

Luckily Payton says she didn’t cash the check.

Payton says she is one of at least three people in Pitt County that have received these fake emails.
