COVINGTON COUNTY, Miss. - According to the National Vaccine Information Center all 50 states except Mississippi and West Virginia, offer vaccination exemption.

The Mississippi Department of Health and Human services denies parents the right to choose, but most that oppose immunizations, believe other health problems come from the shots.

"Most of those parents believe it can cause autism, which I do not believe it is true, and there have been studies proving that that is not true," said Kizzy Smith, School Clinic Coordinator.

Shelley Shoemake, a mother of two home schooled children who have never been vaccinated, fears the shots do... in fact contribute to other disorders.

"By 2025 1 in 2 children will have autistic symptoms, so if there's not a correlation...what is doing this to our children," Shoemake asked.

While Smith says some studies show most childhood diseases vaccinations protect against have subsided, officials say they do not want them to return.

Shoemake says the best thing for parent to do is their homework to decide what's best for their child.

"A lot of parents need to do their own research," she said.
