Only on 3: Sheriff talks about deputy arrest

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

A deputy who worked at the Muscogee County Jail is behind bars after Sheriff John Darr says he was smuggling drugs and other contraband into the jail.

24-year-old Deputy Ramon Williams III is charged with Violation of Oath of Office, Use of Communication Facility, Giving Prisoners Articles, Possession, Manufacture or Distribution of Controlled Substance and Crossing Guard Lines with Drugs.

"It kind of angers me that we would have an employee doing something like that, and I think the people in this community are going to be outraged and frustrated and disappointed that we had an employee conducting himself like this," said Sheriff Darr during an exclusive interview with News 3.

Darr wouldn't give specifics about the kind of drugs, but says he his office had enough evidence to make the arrest Wednesday morning. Deputy Williams was asked to come down to the jail where he was arrested.

Williams has worked for the Sheriff's Office for almost 3 years. He is currently being held in the Harris County Jail.

"He had worked at the county jail- we wouldn't want him around the other inmates that ate being house at the Muscogee County Jail, so it's just best business practice," says Darr.

Sheriff Darr says Williams will be fired and other employees may be arrested as the investigation continues.
