No tax free holiday on school supplies

Posted: Updated:

North Carolinians could be spending more on school supplies this year.

It's the first time in 12 years shoppers will have to pay sales tax on back-to-school items the first weekend in August.

State lawmakers passed a tax reform package in 2013 that lowered personal income taxes and corporate income taxes. In order to do that, the state got rid of different credits including the sales tax holiday.

In the past it was a roughly $13 million in savings for the consumers or $13 million lost for the state, depending on how you look at it.

Nearby states like South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia are doing tax free shopping this weekend.
