Names of 2 killed in Durham wreck released

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

The Durham Police released the names of two people who were killed Friday night in a horrific accident on Patterson Road on the northern side of town.

Angel Santana, 52, was fleeing after a DEA drug investigation, authorities said. Santana, driving a Chevrolet Caprice, drove about a mile or so before he lost control on a wet night and his car slammed into a Chevrolet Lumina driven by Tamara White, 55. White died on the way to the hospital.

A tow-truck worker who arrived to the scene said the impact of the collision was so great that the engine was knocked all the way out of one of the cars.

The cars were towed by Clayton’s Garage and Wrecker Service in Durham, and a worker there who was on the scene Friday night described the site as “just terrible.”

“The cars were mauled,” said the Clayton’s employee, who did not want to give his name. “The engine was knocked out of one of them.”

The tow-truck driver said the driver who was trying to escape the drug stop was a man driving an Impala. He said a woman was driving the other vehicle.

Police said the crash happened after a car was pulled over shortly after 6:15 p.m. during a DEA drug investigation. Police said Santana’s car stopped momentarily but then sped away. Moments later investigating officers came upon the crash scene involving another car.

According to the crash report, Santana was operating his vehicle in an erratic, reckless, careless, negligent or aggressive manner. He exceeded the speed limit and exceed a safe speed for the roadway conditions.
