Wayne County Scam Wayne County Scam
WAYNE COUNTY, Miss. - Nationwide phone scams have been hitting the Pine Belt hard, and Wayne County residents are the latest victims.

"Scams going around, where somebody's calling pretending to be an officer that worked here in the pass or a current officer," said Jamey Beard, Investigator.

And what these scammers want is money, to pay fake fines they say were issued by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.

"Basically saying that you owe some type of fine money or contempt of court, or subpoena and basically threatening these people  with can carry up a fine or three to four years in jail," Beard said.

According to investigator Beard, the caller impersonates a local officer to try get residents to make a payment. The payment being made to a pre-paid card, that cannot be traced.

"None of our officers, constables, deputies so on, collect any type of money cash, check, money order, nothing," said Beard.

So far, Wayne County has reported one victim of this scam, but all residents should stay aware.

"They are just out to get your money, and once you give it to them...it's hard to track it down or get anything back," Beard explained.

Investigators advise residents with unpaid fines to simply visit, or call the Wayne County Justice Court.
