RALEIGH, N.C. -

The Wake County Sheriff's Office will hold an “active shooter” training exercise at Ligon GT Magnet School Friday morning.

The subject of “active shooters” on school campuses was a topic of serious concern at a meeting at the Governor's Crime Commission a year ago. At that meeting, Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison said these types of drills need to be practiced by first responders so they know the best way to deal with an on-campus crisis.

But it's not just first responders that need to know how to handle these types of situations. School officials also need to be prepared.

“We need to practice active shooter drills. The teachers and those in charge have got to automatically take over,” Harrison said.

These drills allow first responders to know how to coordinate with one another and better perfect how they respond to these situations

“Do we have room for improvement? Absolutely,” Harrison said.

The Wake County Sheriff's Office will take the lead during Friday's simulation but the Wake County Public School System, Raleigh Police Department and other emergency response agencies will participate in the exercise.
