GREENVILLE, N.C. - A special event followed ECU's practice Friday morning. The Ice Bucket Challenge is sweeping the Pirate Nation and the ECU football team is no exception.

When practice ended, head coach Ruffin McNeill, along with strength and conditioning coach, Jeff Connors, and director of operations Brian Overton, all participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

It was done in honor of Retired Marine, Maj. Randy Hebert. The retired major has been battling ALS since 1995. His wife Kim Hebert says they are grateful.

"It was a great honor to have him on board with the ALS and I just think that he will probably touch a lot of people around the nation and get them to take this challenge." Hebert said.

Coach McNeill  is a proven leader in our community. He and his wife Erlene are dedicated to service. So it was a matter of when---not 'if' Coach Ruff would accept the challenge.

"It was more than worth it. Its a sacrifice that's nothing close  to what all the victims of the disease go through." McNeill said. "Service is the rent we pay for the privilege to live on this earth."

ECU Quarterback Shane Carden says Friday's tribute was a great way to end pre-season camp. "We've gone through camp but this man out here has gone through a lot more and a lot worse." Carden said. "You know we're proud he is part of our team now."

The national campaign has raised tens of millions for ALS research. To donate click here.
