2 men in prison for 30 years seek new trial in NC

Posted: Updated:
LUMBERTON, N.C. - Half brothers who have spent 30 years in prison for the killing and rape of an 11-year-old girl in North Carolina are asking to be released.

Lawyers for 50-year-old Henry McCollum and 46-year-old Leon Brown say DNA analysis of a cigarette butt found at the crime scene in Robeson County link it to a man serving a life sentence for a similar rape and killing that took place a month later.

The Center for Death Penalty Litigation says that man was the real killer of Sabrina Buie in 1983.

The attorneys say there is no evidence linking McCollum and Brown to the crime and their confessions were coerced.

The hearing is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday. McCollum is currently on death row and Brown is serving a life sentence.
