GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Pitt County school and health workers will hold a vaccination clinic Thursday for teachers and other school employees.

Health workers will conduct those vaccinations by appointment at the Greenville Convention Center. The county only has 200 vaccine doses, which means the first Pitt County school employees getting shots are all 50 years old or older.

District officials say they’ve heard from many teachers eager to get the shots. The county’s health director says it will take several weeks to vaccinate all employees from the school district and Pitt County private schools.

With the limited supply, health officials are partnering with Vidant to vaccinate as many employees as possible.

“Dr. Waldrum and I felt this was a big enough group that it was best to offer two paths to vaccinate,” Pitt County Health Director John Silvernail said.

“Pitt County Schools has over 5,000 employees, over 2,300 of those employees are requesting vaccine. There are over 120 private schools and childcare facilities.”

PCS Superintendent Ethan Lenker said many teachers are eager to get the shots.

“if you’re scheduled (Thursday) during the day, we’re covering classes, we’re covering bus routes, we’re doing whatever we have to do to get people so we can get their vaccines,” Lenker said. “We’re working through age and a couple key positions principals and things.”

In the meantime, officials encourage everyone to continue to follow COVID-19 guidelines, from wearing a mask and social distancing until restrictions are lifted. On Wednesday, Gov. Roy Cooper announced a relaxing of some restrictions, including the stay-at-home order. More people will also be allowed to attend the high school football and other outdoor events starting this week.

“We know much more what high-risk environments are and what we can do to protect the spread,” said Dr. Michael Waldrum, CEO with Vidant Health. “We need to be vigilant on that.”
