Jake Agnos tossed eight strong innings and Jake Washer drove in three runs as NCAA Greenville Regional top seed ECU downed No. 2 seed NC State 9-2 in an elimination contest Sunday afternoon before a crowd of 4,670 at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
The Pirates (44-16) advance to face the loser of the winners’ bracket game between No. 3 seed Campbell and No. 4 seed Quinnipiac Sunday evening at 8 p.m. The Wolfpack ends its season with a 42-19 record.
Washer was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI while Turner Brown, Spencer Brickhouse and Brady Lloyd each rapped out a pair of hits. A quartet of NC State players notched one hit apiece as Patrick Bailey and Evan Edwards both hit solo home runs to account for all of the Wolfpack’s offensive production.
Agnos (11-2) scattered four hits and struck out nine batters, tying the American Athletic Conference career strikeout record at 290. Jason Parker (4-4) took the loss, surrendering two runs on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work.
In the top of the first, Agnos recorded a quick two outs before Bailey took a first-pitch offering over the fence in left field to stake NC State to a 1-0 advantage. ECU looked to respond quickly in the bottom of the second. Brickhouse laced a leadoff double to right and Carter Jenkins drew a one-out walk. Brickhouse moved to third on a wild pitch, but Parker struck out two straight to preserve the Wolfpack lead.
The Pirates broke through in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs to take full control of the proceedings. Ryder Giles singled to begin the frame and Brown executed a hit and run to send Giles to third. With runners on the corners, Alec Burleson beat a throw to first on an attempted double play, allowing Giles to score and knot the game at one.
Following a Brickhouse walk, Washer and Jenkins delivered consecutive RBI singles before Lloyd ripped a double to right field – scoring two on the play. The second run crossed home thanks to a fielding error in right. Lloyd then trotted home on a wild pitch to extend the cushion to 6-1.
Agnos cruised through the middle innings, allowing just two base runners in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames. Washer added to the lead in the bottom of the seventh, belting a 2-0 pitch over the wall in right center to make it 8-1. A Burleson RBI single in the home half of the eighth and an Edwards solo home run in the top of the ninth accounted for the game’s final two runs.
Cam Colmore pitched a clean ninth inning, inducing a pair of ground balls before striking out pinch hitter Terrell Tatum to seal the win.
