JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – In North Carolina, there are 60 different species of mosquitos. Eastern North Carolina is home to 25 of those.

In Jones County prior to Hurricane Dorian, the health department received 4 calls complaining about mosquitos.

After the storm, they reported 128 complaints due to mosquitos according to Wesley Smith, health director.

Mosquitos can carry transmittable diseases like EEE, malaria and the West Nile virus.

“Were encouraging people to wear long sleeves, long pants, socks, use mosquito repellent that uses DEET or other EPA approved repellent ingredients and even encouraging if you don’t need to be out from dusk till dawn, you really don’t need to.” Wesley Smith, Jones County Health Department
