A man from New York is facing various drug charges after a man was found dead and another was injured in Roanoke Rapids early Monday, officials say.

The incident was discovered just after 4 a.m. on Grant Drive, southwest of Roanoke Rapids, according to a news release from the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

Daquinn Fernando Blount, 23, who lives in Georgia but is from Roanoke Rapids, was found dead, deputies said.

Another man was discovered with gunshot wounds and was taken for treatment at a hospital.

Based on the evidence, officials said they have “a clear understanding of what happened concerning the murder of the deceased.”

After Blount was found, a narcotic search warrant was served at the home.

About 372 grams of marijuana, 10 dosage units of heroin, 84 dosage units of oxycodone and several items of drug paraphernalia were seized during the search, deputies said.

A man from New York, Claude Luther Celestine, 39, of Brooklyn was charged with possession with the intent to sell/deliver marijuana, felony possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana paraphernalia, maintaining a vehicle/dwelling for a controlled substance, possession of heroin and common law obstruction.

Celestine was given a $10,000 bond in addition to $5,000 cash for the obstruction charge, deputies said.

His court date is set for August 15.
