The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office has arrested 17 suspects on drug charges as part of Operation H.O.P.E.

The roundup focused on the Verona, Sneads Ferry and Holly Ridge areas.

It is the fifth drug roundup in Onslow County this year.

The name comes from the Heroin Opiate Prevention Education Organization.

After Jason Sapp and Matthew Eyster died from heroin/fentanyl overdoses in 2016, mothers Cindy Patana and Vanessa Sapp decided to form the organization, with the goal to “take back the Ferry” and help those struggling with drug and alcohol addictions.

The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit decided to name their operation after H.O.P.E. because of their close relationship with the organization over the last two years.

To make the arrests, the Drug Enforcement Unit used information from the citizens of Sneads Ferry, which they validated with controlled buys and drug operations.

The Sheriff’s Office said they are eliminating the larger sources of heroin in Onslow County, and that these actions have significantly reduced the spread of the epidemic.

The operation was conducted on Thursday, targeting a total of 21 people. As of Friday, 17 have been arrested.
