Authorities looking for man who escaped on foot after chase in Pitt County

Authorities said they are looking for a man who escaped on foot after a chase in Pitt County.

On Wednesday, the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office said they found a vehicle being operated by Michael L. Smith, 49, of Winterville.

It was known to a detective that there were outstanding felony warrants on Smith.

The detective attempted to stop the vehicle on Corey Road off Firetower Road.

A chase ensued when the driver failed to stop.

The vehicle turned into Boyd Lee Park where he then stopped and fled on foot into the woods but Smith was not found, deputies said.

The Greenville and the Winterville police departments assisted with the case.

Additional felony warrants will be issued on Smith related to the pursuit, deputies said.

Pitt-Greenville Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward leading to Smith’s capture.
