BEAUFORT, N.C. (WNCT) — An abandoned school in Beaufort could soon become a cultural center of the downtown area.

At the town commissioners meeting Monday night, the Oliver family will be asking for the town to endorse their plan to change the old Beaufort Elementary School auditorium into a performing arts center for the town.

Town commissioner and Mayor Pro-Temp Sharon Harker said approving the center would mean preserving a piece of history.

“Beaufort Elementary,” said Harker, “is a big history part of Beaufort. So it being saved, and the auditorium being saved, is a big huge tie for those that are local and those that are history buffs as well. So saving this project is great.”

If the town endorses the plan, the Oliver family can move forward and work to find funding for the project.
