A new beach access and parking area is opening along North Carolina’s Outer Banks next week.

Officials with the Cape Hatteras National Seashore said in a news release the new Buxton Beach Access, located at the end of Old Lighthouse Road, will have a 50-car parking lot and non-slip wheelchair beach access mat.

The access point, which once served as a U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard base, will open on May 24.

The area will have portable restrooms until a permanent facility — equipped with showers and other upgrades — can be developed.

Officials said the new area is one of 29 projects the National Park Service approved in November 2013.
