Carteret County foundation uses donations to help rebuild homes

The Carteret County Public Schools Foundation is making it their mission to aid as many people who have been affected by Hurricane Florence.

The organization is formed by 12 volunteers who have collected $380,000 since Florence. All monetary contributions are made by the public.

The dollars are then distributed to families who have been affected by the storm.

Administrators, counselors or teachers can recommend a student or family receive help if they hear about it.

The communications director will then hear about the case, review it and work to address the needs as soon as possible.

Because of monetary donations, people have been able to receive money for gas, food or rental assistance.

So far, the foundation has spent $210,000 since Florence to help families in the school district.

“It’s emotionally exhausting and rewarding at the same time,” said Tabbie Nance, communications director for Carteret County Public Schools. “I cry a lot because these cases are very dear to our hearts cause these are our children and our employees.”

Aside from the initial needs, the foundation is moving on to bigger needs. They will help people rebuild their homes, including roofs.

The foundation will continue to aid people if there are funds.
