Carteret County officials have confirmed a case of a fox testing positive for rabies.
The Carteret County Sheriff’s Department and the Carteret County Animal Control responded to a call for service involving a potentially rabid fox in the vicinity of Golden Farm Road east of Beaufort.
The fox was euthanized and the specimen was submitted to the State Public Health Lab for rabies testing.
Results were received on Friday, verifying that the fox was positive for rabies.
“Members of the public noticing wildlife exhibiting abnormal behavior should contact Carteret County Animal Control immediately,” said Tommy Bell, Carteret County Health Department Animal Control Officer. County residents should be aware of wildlife and should not leave food out that will attract animals. We want everyone to know that rabies can be present in wildlife, so it’s important to keep your pets up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations.”
