In Craven County, homeowners are getting relief following Florence.
New Bern Church of Christ is spending the week handing out furniture, washing machines and more to families in need.
This is all happening at the former museum at 408 Hancock Street in New Bern.
The furniture was hauled in from Churches of Christ Disaster Relief, which is based in Nashville.
Minister Steven Hurst said while some people have received insurance money to rebuild their homes, many of those homes still have nothing inside.
There are full dining room and bedroom furniture sets available, as well as dryers, refrigerators, water heaters and more.
Hurst said it is free of charge with no strings attached.
He said people have been seeking help from across the East, namely Craven, Jones and Pamlico Counties.
“The Lord was telling us about a man who saw a need and had the ability to do something about it, and that’s what we are doing,” Hurst said. “We see a need, and God has given us the ability to help those who are in need, and that’s what we do. It’s New Testament Christianity. You can’t have a faith in God and not care about your fellow man.”
The majority of the people they are filling orders for at this time signed up for help several months ago.
However, come Thursday, whatever they have left will be available to anyone still in need.
Hurst said they served over 200 people Monday alone, and expect the building to be cleared out of supplies by Friday.
