The Corolla Wild Horse Fund announced that the first foal of 2019 was born on March 31, and though they have not yet determined the sex of the baby they have chosen a name for the baby. Welcome, Renzi!

The foal is named after a very special person, who made her first trip to OBX the same weekend the foal was born – on her birthday.

Melissa Renzi suffers from several terminal conditions and has been in hospice care since 2017.

Seeing the wild horses of Corolla was on her bucket list, and thanks to friends and the local community, that dream became a reality.

Melissa’s friend Christy Miller began trying to organize the special trip several years ago, and things finally came together last weekend.

Melissa and her husband Jim drove down from their home in Virginia and stayed at the Hampton by Hilton Corolla/Outer Banks, who generously offered them a discounted rate on their room.

Uncle Ike’s Sandbar & Grill and Cosmo’s Pizza Corolla provided meals, Bob’s Wild Horse Tours gave them a ride up the beach to see the horses (with guide Jeff Kelly who coordinated most of the weekend), and Just for the Beach Rentals gave Melissa a beach wheelchair to use while she was here.

They also came and visited the horses at the CWHF rescue farm.

Melissa and Jim are already planning a visit back to see little Renzi in person.
