This coming Saturday from 9am to 11am, Pine Knoll Shores Officers will be hosting a crosswalk safety campaign at the Hampton Inn crosswalk on NC Hwy 58.
Officers will be on the lookout for crosswalk violations from motorists and pedestrians and will be available to answer questions and bring awareness to the need to yield to pedestrians that are actively crossing in the crosswalk.
The Hampton Inn crosswalk has historically been their most dangerous crosswalk for pedestrians and motorists, according to Pine Knoll Shores police.
For the past 3 years, they have partnered with Watch for Me NC to reduce the number of vehicle collisions at our crosswalks and increase voluntary compliance.
North Carolina General Statute 20-173 states the following: “Where traffic-control signals are not in place or in operation the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way, slowing down or stopping if need be to so yield, to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at or near an intersection”
