BATTLEBORO, N.C. (WNCT) A man killed himself after shooting his estranged wife in Battleboro, officials said.

The Edgecombe Sheriff’s Office and detectives responded to a call of a domestic assault involving a firearm on N.C. 97 West.

Officials said that a subject approached and shot his estranged wife, who was then able to escape and get to safety.

She is receiving medical care and is expected to recover.

Officials in the area said they located the suspect with the aid of a helicopter and approached his vehicle on a wooded path.

Deputies heard a single gunshot.

Deputies approached the vehicle and said they found the male suspect deceased of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
