Down East Wood Ducks prepare to kick off home season opener

The Down East Wood Ducks prepare to kick off the first game of the new season Thursday.

The Wood Ducks will take on the Carolina Mudcats at 7 p.m. at the historic Grainger Stadium in Kinston.

There are some exciting new food options this year, which include: funnel cake fries, meatball sliders, and chicken and waffle sandwiches.

There will also be a speed pitch game for fans to see how hard they can throw on the first base side of the field.

Staff says they are excited to get the season underway.

“This is actually the first time in the three year history of the team that the Wood Ducks open up here at home which is pretty cool,” said Matt Present, Director of Broadcasting and Media Relations for the team. “We have an 11 game home stand, that’s pretty unprecedented in baseball usually you only get a couple of series in a row.. not 11 straight, usually.. so fans early on will have a lot of opportunities to come out.”

The weekend series will also include a Friday night post-game firework show and a tee shirt giveaway on Saturday.

More than 2,500 people are expected to attend the home opener, so staff suggests you arrive early to take your seat. Gates open at 6 Friday and Sunday. The gates will open at 5 on Saturday.
