The town of Emerald Isle is looking for bidders to help one of its fire stations rebuild after Hurricane Florence caused some damage.
Emerald Isle Fire Station #2 has some interior, exterior and roof damages that have limited the work of firefighters.
Interim Town Manager Randy Martin said it will cost tens of thousands of dollars to repair the station.
The biggest problem for them is looking for contractors willing to take on the job while there is a high demand for construction workers.
“We’ve had a significant amount of inquiries,” said Martin. “A lot of contractors are busy right now, so that worries us, so we hope there’s sufficient competition to ensure we get bids that are within budget.”
He also said the building is functional but not to the extent for firefighters to do their job.
“We’ve been able to meet the demand and the call volume at this point, but we know that will increase with the season and the year, tourism,” said Martin. “So, it’s imperative we get it done before that.”
Bids for the project are due by January 11.
