Former Ocracoke resident arrested in W.V. on 2 child sex-related charges

A former Ocracoke resident has been arrested in West Virginia on two child sex-related charges, officials said.

The Hyde County Sheriff’s Office contacted the McMechen Police Department in West Virginia on Wednesday around 4:20 p.m. asking for assistance in locating Brian Britton.

Deputies in Hyde County knew Britton’s last known address to be his family home in McMechen.

The McMechen police were able to identify Britton from a photograph.

In less than three hours, the McMechen police were able to locate and take Britton into custody.

The Hyde County Sheriffs Office would like to thank Officer Rob Smith and the McMechen Police Department for all of their assistance.

Through inter-agency cooperation and an extensive nine-month investigation, Britton will now be sent back to North Carolina to face justice.

Britton was charged with statutory rape of a child 15 years or less and indecent liberties with a minor.
