Police are investigating the death of a Rocky Mount man who they found lying in the middle of the road badly beaten early Sunday.
Police found 37-year-old David Sandoval around midnight Saturday.
“At first I just didn’t believe it you know?” said Sandoval’s friend, Autumn Ventura Rivera.
Rocky Mount police say they responded to a call at King James Court about disorderly conduct.
When they arrived they found Sandoval on the road. He died shortly after they got there from his injuries.
“He’d give the shirt off his back to help anybody,” said Sandoval’s friend, Tammie Anayasamdana. “My two girls and boys he was all the time helping them, playing with them. We went to Chuckie Cheese not too long ago.”
Friends and family say Sandoval’s mother lives in Honduras and he worked hard at a roofing company to send her money.
“He loved everybody,” said Ventura Rivera. “He would stay here and work all the time and go without food if he had to – to send home to his mama that’s sick.”
Sandoval died on the road in front of his home. Friends say he had been renovating it and was getting ready to move in.
“He would show me sneak peek pictures,” said Anayasamdana. “He would never let me go in there until he got it completely done and still to this day I’ve never walked in there.”
Police were seen using search dogs during a manhunt for those responsible for the deadly attack on Sunday afternoon.
“Just want everyone to pray for his mother in Honduras,” said Anaysamdana. “She’s very bad off.”
“And pray for his family here,” said Ventura Rivera.
Sandoval’s family says Rocky Mount police have been questioning one man and they are still looking for another suspect.
CBS 17 reached out to police to confirm that, but so far have not heard back.
