A suspect died in a shootout during an attempted burglary and assault at a Goldsboro home on Monday night, police say.

The incident was reported around 8:30 p.m. as a “shots fired” call at lot six, 508 W. New Hope Road, Goldsboro police said in a news release.

The residents of the home — a man, his 7-year-old son, and another man — were found at the scene. The man with a son had been shot and was taken to Wayne UNC Health Care, the news release said.

The three residents said that three suspects “forced their way into the home” and shot the victim, according to the news release.

One of the residents fired back at the suspects during the incident, police said.

The three suspects fled and one of them was later found in woods near the scene.

Ryan Allen, 40, of Rockefeller Court in Goldsboro, who was a suspect in the incident, was found with a gunshot wound, police said.

Allen was transported to Vidant Hospital in Greenville but later died during surgery.

Police said they are continuing to investigate the incident.
