Greenville Fire and Rescue offers tips to prevent house fire

Local

9 On Your Side is digging deeper after several house fires occurred across the east last week.

One was in Carteret County, another in Pitt and a third in Lenoir, which left two people dead.

Those three house fires broke out in our area all within a one-week time frame.

While it’s unclear the exact cause of those three fires, Greenville Fire and Rescue said there are more house fires due to space heaters this time of year.

It’s important people make sure the heaters have three feet of clearance from surrounding items.

Fire officials also said it is imperative people keep and check their smoke alarms regularly.

“One of the things we want to make sure is the importance of having working smoke alarms inside your home so if you need help with your smoke alarm, that is a free service we provide with the City of Greenville,” said Fire Marshal Bryant Beddard.

Beddard adds that many newer apartment complexes already have sprinkler systems built in.

He said that is your safest bet.

Beddard also said that cooking is the number one cause of house fire.
