Jacksonville police chief receives state award

The North Carolina Association of Chiefs of Police has awarded Jacksonville police Chief Mike Yaniero with its Outstanding Service Award.

Yaniero has been in the field for 39 years, but he said the true heroes are his command staff and the community.

He also cited partnerships with the City Council and nearby agencies that have allowed them to tackle the opioid epidemic and child abuse

Yaniero said when many resources come together, it makes the job easier and makes for a better place to live.

“It’s not about me,” he said. “It’s about this community, how we come together to make things better for our children and our future. that’s really the most important part about this award.”

The state organization selects one police chief annually in recognition of their contribution to law enforcement.
