The Gate of Lenoir County is launching a new program “Cash for Trash” to clean up the community and provide service opportunities to young kids, all while fundraising for the group.
“There’s cities that get a bad rep and I know we have our trouble here in Kinston,” said Scott Brewer, program assistant with the Gate of Lenoir County, “but today this is going to be positive.”
The Gate of Lenoir County is starting a program to enhance the city of Kinston and Lenoir County by picking up trash.
“We’re doing Cash for Trash,” said Indhia Fraser, a group member, “we’re cleaning up and helping the community and giving back.”
Through the fundraiser, residents and business owners have pledged per bag how much trash will be picked up using standard sized trash bags.
“We’ve got donations where people will donate anywhere from 10 cents to 25 cents a bag.”
Over a dozen of kids chose to spend their spring break participating in the program. It provides these kids, who come from inner city and other public housing areas, with community service opportunities.
“They’re out on Easter break,” said Brewer, “they could be hanging out on the corner or being doing something they might not should be doing but out here they’re serving, they’re helping in the neighborhoods that they live in and it’s just a positive role model for the kids to be doing.”
Sixth graders all the way up to seniors in high school will be spending the next two weeks picking up trash throughout the community. The kids say doing community service together not only makes the community a better place, but them a better person.
“It makes me feel good because I like giving back to the community,” said Fraser.
“This program and Boys to Men of the Gate means a lot to me because if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be the person I am today,” said Jonathan Bryant, a member of the group.
“They’ve gone through a lot and they’ve got so much to give,” said Brewer.
Pledges are still being received, to do so contact Donna Hardy at the Gate, phone 252-939-3223 or email email@example.com.
