Local sorority gives more than $35,000 in scholarships


All over the east, some students and community groups are celebrating the scholarships and donations they were given tonight.

The local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. gave a total of thirty-five thousand dollars in scholarships and charitable giving.

Today was their day of giving.

Five high school graduates and 10 community partners left with a donation from the sorority.

“It’s the whole purpose of our being to give service to all mankind. And in our own community over $35,000 to non-profits and to help young ladies go to college” said Bernita Demery member of the Iota Kappa Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.

Some of the recipients tonight were relay for life, the American Heart Association, and Pitt Community College.

In the chapters close to 50-year history they have given out more than one million dollars in scholarships and charitable given to Eastern North Carolina.
