A man has been arrested on theft charges after several break-ins and attempted armed robbery in the Chocowinity area, authorities said.
Steven H. Martin, 38 of Blounts Creek, was charged with attempted common law robbery, breaking and entering and theft after breaking and entering.
On Wednesday midnight, the Beaufort County Emergency Communications said they received a report of an attempted armed robbery from the Chocowinity Convenient Mart.
The Chocowinity Police Department along with the Beaufort County Deputies responded to the call.
Authorities said the clerk on duty at the time reported that Martin demanded money after entering the store with brandishing a plastic gun.
Martin fled the store on foot after the clerk refused to comply with his demand, authorities said.
Ten minutes later, authorities responded to a break-in at the Fountain Lodge in Chocowinity.
The clerk on duty reported that while she was out to lunch, someone broke into the motel office and took the entire cash register, authorities said.
While deputies responded to the call at Fountain Lodge, an officer saw Martin near Chocowinity Sports Complex and stopped him for questioning.
Martin was near Chocowinity Middle School and deputies said the school was placed in a lockdown which lasted only a few minutes.
Authorities started to investigate and said they recovered physical evidence like outer clothing, gloves and a plastic gun used at the Chocowinity Convenient Mart.
The stolen cash register was located and Martin was arrested, authorities said.
Martin was sent to the Beaufort County Detention Center and was given a $50,000 bond.
