Medical examiner: Martin Co. mother, daughter stabbed to death

WILLIAMSTON, N.C. (WNCT) – The mother and daughter who were found dead at the bottom of a well in Williamston last week were stabbed to death, according to the Eastern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

The mother, Dawn Ward, died from a stab wound to the chest, while her daughter was stabbed in the chest multiple times, according to the medical examiner.

25-year-old Jeffrey Ward of Williamston is charged with two counts of murder. Ward is being held without bond. 24-year-old Jerrett Ward of Williamston is charged with two counts of accessory after the fact. He is being held under a $1,000,000 bond.

In their court appearance Monday, the Ward brothers were appointed public defenders. Their next court appearance is set for December 14. Investigators arrested the pair Saturday afternoon.

Students and staff at Bear Grass Charter School came together Monday morning for a ceremony to honor the lives of Dawn Ward and her 14-year-old daughter Taylor Carroll.

There’s a growing memorial at the school for both Dawn and Taylor, as Taylor was a student at the school. Monday, the people who used to call her student, classmate, and friends will come together to remember her.

Dozens of people have spoken out about their love and admiration for the mother and daughter since the news of their deaths broke last week.

Ministers from surrounding counties, grief counselors, family members of staff, and former students are joining students and staff at the school for the ceremony for Dawn and Taylor.

WNCT spoke to the principal of Bear Grass Charter School after this weekend’s vigil about the questions still lingering.

“From the students and the staff, it’s just why? And we can’t answer that. We’re not the ones to answer that. But that’s a lot of the question is why? Why did this happen? It’s very difficult for a teacher that has taught a child and to look and see that empty seat in their classroom. And it is. But that’s the question is why and we don’t know why,” said Principal Donna Moore.

The ceremony got underway at 8 a.m. in the school’s auditorium. At this time, no funeral arrangements have been announced.
