Moms push for Momnibus Bill

Jessica Thomas is one of 150 moms from across the nation who made a visit to D.C. this past weekend to urge policymakers to pass the Momnibus Bill.

The bill would cover help with diapers, maternity leave, maternal care, better screening processes, and the expansion of Medicaid until the baby is 12 months.

“Medicaid is a common controversial topic but one of the quotes that I took away this weekend was we may not all be mothers but we have all been born therefore that makes the stakeholders in maternal care and maternal mental health,” Thomas said.

Jessica Thomas, Perinatal Outreach Director with Hope Women and Family Services Inc., said on her trip to D.C., she learned that one of the bills lobbied by last year’s Mom Congress has passed.

“And a $60,000 grant was given to North Carolina to host training through postpartum support international for providers,” Thomas said.

Thomas said, while fighting to bring awareness to the needs of mothers in the rural counties of eastern North Carolina, she learned that she, too, has a voice and can effect change.

“It’s really important to use your voice and to know that we are seen and heard and to advocate for what we believe in,” Thomas said.

Amanda Dodson, a military spouse, and Co-Founder of Military Birth Resource Network at Camp Lejeune, also believes in bringing awareness to the needs of mothers.

That’s why this Saturday she is hosting the first Birth and Baby Fair in Jacksonville.

“We are looking to bring a lot of the community resources together for expecting and Postpartum families here in the area,” Dodson said.

There will be family vendors, raffles, along with local providers. Keynote speakers will also inform the community about postpartum health and recovery.

“We are going to have postpartum support international there,” Dodson said. “They are going to come and represent at a table. We’re going to have just all kinds of resources for moms so that they don’t feel left alone.”

The Birth and Baby Fair is open to the community. It starts at 10:00 and runs until 3:00 at the Courtyard Marriott.
