NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) — New Bern police were at a home Wednesday conducting an initial death investigation that has now been classified as a homicide, officials said.

WNCT’s Toni Snyder reports the investigation was being held at a home on Rhem Avenue. Lt. Jason Williams said the investigation began Wednesday morning. There were a number of police and other vehicles at the location.

Wednesday afternoon, police released new details, saying they received a call at 3:35 a.m. about an unknown medical emergency at 1717 Rhem Avenue. Police and medical personnel responded and found William S. Burger, 51, of New Bern, dead inside.

A woman, who was not identified, was taken to CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern with non-life-threatening injuries, treated and released, police said.

Officials did not have any additional information to release since their investigation was in the preliminary stages. Police did say there was no threat to the public. The police department was also working with the District Attorney’s office in regards to the case.
