After more than a year of planning, Jacksonville’s first YMCA is set to open in a few months.
Organizers and leaders of the facility have raised a million dollars in their fundraising efforts to make it happen.
Thursday morning, local partners were able to get a firsthand look at the New River YMCA that will be located on Chaney Avenue.
Officials say there’s a need for the facility, something that could have been used during Hurricane Florence.
“We could’ve offered day camp programs knowing that the schools were not open, we could’ve been able to be open or we could’ve been shelter for folks that needed a place to stay,” said Billy Sewell, Chief Volunteer officer for the New River YMCA.
Construction on the 9,500 square foot building will begin within the next 60 days. It’s expected to open in early spring of 2019.
