The 16th Annual Festival of Trees is set to kick off in Onslow County this weekend, and one non-profit is partnering with the community to bring a hospice center to the area.
For the past 15 years, Onslow Caregivers has made it their mission to raise funds for a new facility.
Families currently must travel to Carteret County or Wilmington to find a hospice bed for loved ones.
Organizers said this year’s festival was uncertain due to Hurricane Florence.
“We’ve had thousands of letters signed by citizens that they would support a hospice house in this area, because it’s needed so much,” said Jean Cole, festival coordinator.
The festival starts Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m.
It will continue Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
