Onslow County gives firework safety tips

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — With Fourth of July coming, many people are gearing up for a fireworks show. Onslow County is giving some tips on how you can enjoy the holiday more safely.

Each year, fireworks cause more than twenty million dollars a year in property loss nationwide.

They can also cause injuries if not handled properly.

Onslow County Fire Marshal Brian Kelly said one good way to avoid negative consequences is by not purchasing dangerous fireworks.

“In North Carolina,” said Kelly, “it’s illegal to purchase and set off anything that leaves the ground. So if it’s a firework that would leave the ground, for you as a consumer, it’s against the law and you shouldn’t do it.”

Kelly said if you still want to see a huge fireworks show, you should leave it to the professionals.
