In Pitt County, the summer meals program begins this week.
Starting Thursday, 19 locations across the county will offer nutritious meals throughout the summer.
The free program is eligible for anyone ages 1 to 18.
Organizers said the goal is to continue offering healthy meals when school is not in session.
“We have a high need,” Pitt County Schools Child Nutrition Director Gretchen Wilson said. “Half of our students are already meeting the free and reduced guidelines, about 57 percent on average, so we have the students right here that need to come. If we have students who need to come, their siblings likely need to come, so there is a high need in the Pitt County area.”
The program runs through August 9 and offers free breakfasts and lunches.
